Commissioned USS James L. Davis, 30 December 1861, at Philadelphia, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant Joseph Winn in command
USS James L. Davis joined the West Gulf Blockading Squadron off Pass a L'Outre, LA. 5 February 1862
Reassigned to the East Gulf Blockading Squadron in exchange for USS Preble in February 1862
James L. Davis arrived Cedar Keys, FL., 2 March 1862
On 10 March, captured schooner Florida
In September 1862, took English schooner Isabel
Reassigned, 2 October, as supply ship carrying stores and provisions to other vessels of the squadron
Relieved USS Ethan Allen at St. Joseph's Bay, FL., in March 1863
Ordered to Key West for repairs 15 November
Ordered to Tampa Bay in early 1864 where she served until fall
On 4 May 1864, she joined USS Sunflower and USS Honduras in landing Army troops at Tampa
and in providing men for a naval, landing party
During the operation on 6 May the three ships cooperated in capturing blockade-running sloop Neptune
In July and August, James L. Davis participated in a series of successful boat expeditions which destroyed salt works, a large saw and grist mill, and a
sugar mill belonging to Jefferson Davis
On 1 September James L. Davis was ordered to St. Joseph's Bay and served there until ordered to Key West for repairs 1 April 1865
Ordered to Philadelphia, 21 April, she decommissioned there, date unknown, and was sold at public auction 20 June 1865
