Bark:
  • Built in 1859 at Boston, MA.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased by the Navy, 23 August 1861
  • Commissioned, 3 October 1861, at Boston, Acting Volunteer Lieutenant W. B. Eaton in command
  • During Ethan Allen's first cruise, 27 October 1861 to 30 March 1863, she patrolled in the Gulf of Mexico capturing eight prizes, and destroying salt works along the Florida coast
  • At Boston under repair from 22 June to 28 October 1863
  • After repairs Ethan Allen cruised along the New England coast to protect merchantmen and fishing craft from Southern cruisers
  • She joined the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron off Port Royal, S.C., 26 November
  • During the following year and a half, she patrolled the Carolina coast, and for several months served as practice ship for junior officers of her squadron
  • Decommissioned, 26 June 1865, at Portsmouth, N.H. and was sold 20 July 1865

    Namesake
    Ethan Allen (January 21, 1738 [O.S. January 10, 1737] – February 12, 1789) was a farmer, businessman, land speculator, philosopher, writer, lay theologian, American Revolutionary War patriot, and politician. He is best known as one of the founders of Vermont and for the capture of Fort Ticonderoga early in the Revolutionary War. He was the brother of Ira Allen and the father of Frances Allen.(Wikipedia)
