  • Built, date and location unknown
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased by the Navy, 15 October 1861, at Middletown, CT., from Mr. Warner of Haddam, CT.
  • Converted to a mortar schooner at New York Navy Yard
  • Commissioned USS Maria J. Carlton, 29 January 1862, at New York Navy Yard, Acting Master Charles E. Jack in command
  • USS Maria J. Carlton was assigned to the CDR. David Porter's Mortar Flotilla
  • The schooner got under way for the mouth of the Mississippi in mid-February 1862 and crossed the bar at Pas a L'Outre 18 March
  • USS Maria J. Carlton participated in the bombardment of Forts St. Philip and Jackson below New Orleans
  • Maria J. Carlton operated with the 2d Division of CDR. Porter's Mortar Flotilla in the cannonade
  • On the second day a Confederate shot struck her magazine deck and tore a large hole in her bottom
  • Two crewmen were wounded and the schooner quickly sank
