Contreras - The battle of Contreras, took place on August 19th and 20th, 1847. This engagement pitted General Winfield Scott against General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna concerning the
American advance on Mexico City. General Santa Anna fortified the causeway between lakes Chalco and Texcoco on the National Highway to Mexico City. Trying to avoid premature confrontations
Scott decided to take the difficult road across the lava bed south of Lake Chalco. This route was commanded by the heights of Contreras, held by General Gabriel Valencia. After severe fighting,
the Americans drove Valencia from Contreras and captured Churubusco the same day. Mexican losses have been estimated at 700; Scott's losses were 60 dead and wounded
