Cargo Ship:
  • Laid down in 1893 as the steel cargo ship Asturian Prince, at J. Readhead & Sons, South Shields, England for the Prince Steam Shipping Co. Ltd.
  • Launched, 29 August 1893
  • Delivered October 1893 to Prince Steam Shipping Co. Ltd., Newcastle, England
  • Wrecked, 6 February 1895, on the east point of Curacao on a voyage from Puerto Cabello to Curacao with iron and general cargo
  • Refloated, 10 July 1895 and sold to Miami Steamship Co. Inc., New York; renamed Matteawan, reflagged USA
  • Requisitioned in 1898 by U.S.Army Quartermaster Corps as troop ship during the Spanish-American War, commissoned USAQMD Matteawan
  • Matteawan transported the Bates Independent Brigade, 20th U.S. Infantry, and the 2nd U.S. Cavalry to Cuba in 1898
  • Retired from U.S. Army service, circa 1900
  • Sold in 1900 to Saginaw Steel Steamship Co,, New York.
  • Final Dispostion, departed Naniamo B.C., 12 February 1901 for for San Francisco with a cargo of coal. Subsequently reported missing
