  • Laid down, circa 1873-744 as the single funnel Ocean Liner SS City of Berlin at Caird & Company, Greenock, Scotland
  • Launched, 24 October 1874
  • Delivered to Inman Line, Liverpool, England
  • Maiden voyage, Liverpool to New York, 29 April 1875
  • Re-engined with a Laird Bros. triple expansion steam engine in 1887
  • Name reduced to Berlin in 1895
  • Purchased by the U.S. Government in 1898, assigned to the U.S. Army Quartermasters Corp
  • Christened, commissioned and placed in service as U.S. Army Transport USAT Meade in 1898
  • Meade carried troops to the Philippines until she was seriously damaged by a fire in San Francisco, 31 January 1906
  • Repaired, she continued service through World War I and was finally scrapped in 1921
  • Decommissioned and retired from U.S. Army service, in 1921
  • Final Disposition, scrapped in 1921

    Namesake
    George Gordon Meade (December 31, 1815 – November 6, 1872) was a career United States Army officer and civil engineer best known for decisively defeating Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. He previously fought with distinction in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican–American War. During the Civil War. Earlier in his career, he was an engineer and was involved in the coastal construction of several lighthouses.(Wikipedia)
