  • Launched, 28 January 1943
  • Delivered, 27 February 1943, to the War Shipping Administration, allocated the the War Department the same day
    Named for Andrew Dickson White(1832-1918), historian and educator. White was the cofounder and first president of Cornell University, and the founder of the American Historical Society. White served as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1879-1881 and 1897-1902, and the U.S. Ambassador to Russia from 1892-1894.
