78' Higgins Motor Torpedo Boat:

  • Laid down 13 July 1944 by Higgins Industries, New Orleans, LA
  • Launched 23 August 1944
  • Completed 18 February 1945
  • Placed in service 19 February 1945 and assigned to Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron FORTY THREE (PTRon 43) under the command of Lt. Richard C. Morse, Jr., USNR
  • PTRon 43, assigned to Pacific Fleet, was decommissioned 23 March 1945 so that its boats might be transferred to the Soviet Union
  • Deck loaded on LST-1084 at New Orleans, LA for transit to Puget Sound Navy Yard
  • Arrived at Puget Sound 28 April 1945
  • Transferred to the Soviet Union 8 June 1945 at Seattle, WA and reclassified TK-857
  • Fate unknown.

    The forward gun is a army-type 37mm automatic. The rocket launchers fired 5" spin-stabilized rockets. Elevated guns further aft are four 0.50 Brownings and one 20mm Oerlikon; a 40mm Bofors can barely be seen right aft. Torpedoes were dropped from racks along the deck edge
