Following service in WHIDBEY ISLAND, CDR Brinn went to Surface Warfare Officers School command where he served as an Engineering Instructor for Diesel propulsion. While teaching at SWOS, he also earned his Masters of Science degree in Information Systems from Bryant College.
CDR Brinn served his Department Head tours as Weapons Officer followed by Combat Systems Officer in USS BARRY (DDG 52) from December 2003 to October 2006. He then went back to sea to serve as Navigator and Senior Watch Officer in USS NASSAU (LHA 4). While serving in BARRY, he deployed twice, once in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, and next in support of SSG 061 conducting operations in West Africa in support of CTF 65 and later as primary Air Defense Commander during summer 2006 during the Lebanon NEO. While serving in NASSAU, he completed a mini-EUCOM deployment for exercise PHEONIX EXPRESS, a rigorous training cycle, and his ship earned the Battle Effectiveness award.
After NASSAU, CDR Brinn went to the Pentagon where he served on the OPNAV Staff in the Surface Warfare Directorate. He was the Surface Ship Radar Requirements Officer (N865R) from April 2008 – October 2009. His most recent assignment was the N7 Training Standards Department Head at ATG Norfolk and is the coordinator for the SWO Intro Course. While on shore duty, CDR Brinn completed the Space Systems Certificate graduate program from the Naval Postgraduate School, enabling him to join the Navy's Space Cadre.
CDR Brinn reported to USS CARTER HALL (LSD 50) as Executive Officer the day before the ship was ordered to sail to New York to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in 2012. He served as Executive Officer for 18 months which included an 8 month deployment to the Arabian Gulf. In May 2014 he fleeted up to Commanding Officer where he led the effort to manage an 18 month multi-million dollar dry-docking availability which included many mid-life upgrades to the ship's engineering and combat systems. He successfully completed his tour as Commanding Officer in August of 2015 and currently serves on the Joint Staff in Hampton Roads, VA.
