CDR Patterson enlisted in the Navy in 1989. Following Recruit Training and EN Class “A” school, he completed tours onboard USS FRESNO (LST 1182), USS JOHN A. MOORE (FFG19) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Seven. In Nov 1996, EN1(SW) Patterson reported to Naval Officer Candidate School in Pensacola Florida as an Officer Candidate and Seaman to Admiral selectee.
CDR Patterson’s initial division officer tours included Strike Warfare and Ship’s Maintenance and Material Officer in USS HEWITT (DD 966), and Operations Officer in USS ZEPHYR (PC 8).
In Sept 2001, he reported for duty under instruction to the University of San Diego. In Aug 2004, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.
Following Department Head School, CDR Patterson returned to sea in May 2005 as Engineer Officer in USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42). After GERMANTOWN, he reported as Deputy Director of Engineering Assessments (Diesel), Afloat Training Group Pacific. During his ATG tour, he completed an eight-month Individual Augmentation Tour as the Defense Energy Support Center (DESC) Bulk Fuel Responsible Officer for Tactical Petroleum Terminal Cedar II An Nasiriyah Iraq.
CDR Patterson next reported to Sealift Logistics Command Pacific where he served as CTF 33 Scheduling Officer. In Oct 2010, he reported for duty under instruction at the Naval War College, Newport Rhode Island where he completed a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
CDR Patterson reported to USS TORTUGA (LSD 46), forward deployed to Sasebo Japan, as the ship’s Executive Officer in June 2012. In August of 2013, USS TORTUGA completed hullswap with USS ASHLAND and CDR Patterson continued as Executive Officer in ASHLAND until January 2014 when he fleeted up to be the ship’s sixteenth Commanding Officer.
Commander Patterson’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (1), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (5) and various unit and campaign awards.
