CDR Brian J. Finman was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 with a degree in Systems Engineering and a commission in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer.
CDR Finman began his career aboard USS RENTZ (FFG-46) as Combat Information Center Officer. In 1995, he completed the Navy’s Nuclear Power Training Program and reported to Reactor Department in USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN-71).
As First Lieutenant on USS GUNSTON HALL (LSD-44), CDR Finman participated in a UNITAS and West Africa Training Cruise deployment in 2001. He then reported to USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN-71) and served as Reactor Training Assistant until early 2004. He became Executive Officer of USS CARTER HALL (LSD-50) in 2005 and deployed with the NASSAU Expeditionary Strike Group.
During shore duty assignments, he has been an Instructor at NROTC Unit Hampton Roads in Norfolk, Virginia, the Surface Nuclear Assignments detailer at Navy Personnel Command in Millington, Tennessee, a student at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, and a Branch Head on the Staff of NATO's Maritime Command Headquarters in Naples, Italy. CDR Finman holds a Masters of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University and a Masters in National Security Studies from the Naval War College. He is a qualified Joint Specialty Officer and has been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (four awards) and Navy Achievement Medal (three awards). He is also authorized to wear a variety of unit and service awards.
