USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43)
CDR. Michael D. Johnson, USN
Commander Michael Johnson hails from Sioux Falls, South Dakota and raised in Summerville, South Carolina. He received his commission
in 1998 after graduating from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science.
His first tour of duty was aboard USS AUSTIN (LPD 4) serving as the Main Propulsion Division Officer, deploying to the Mediterranean
Sea. In 2001, he reported as the Navigation and Administrative Officer aboard USS STUMP (DD 978).
His first shore tour was in Norfolk, Virginia at Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command as the Assistant Current Operations Officer.
In 2004, he was assigned as the Combat Systems Officer to PCU MESA VERDE where he remained as part of the commissioning crew for
USS MESA VERDE (LPD 19). In 2007, he reported to USS BATAAN (LHD 5) as the Training Officer and then served as Navigation Officer
onboard while completing a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf.
CDR Johnson reported as a student to the Naval War College in 2010 where he completed his Joint Professional Military Education
Phase I and earned a Master of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. Upon graduation, CDR Johnson reported to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command as the Surface Operations Officer in the Future Operations department, forward deployed in Manama, Bahrain.
In May 2014, CDR Johnson assumed the duties of Executive Officer aboard USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD 43).
CDR Johnson’s decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.
