Captain Thompson, a native of Maryland, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Politics from University of Maryland in 1990. He earned his commission through the George Washington University Naval ROTC Program and entered the Surface Warfare training pipeline.
Captain Thompson was assigned initially as the Deck Department Second Division Officer in USS SAINT LOUIS (LKA 116), forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. In 1993, he reported as Communication Officer and then as Navigator in USS RUSHMORE (LSD 47) in San Diego, California. In 1995 he reported as the Officer In Charge Military Detachment USNS GUADALUPE (T-AO 200). In 1996, he reported to Defense Information Systems Agency in Arlington, VA as an Action Officer and served extensively in the European Theater supporting the Army and the Air Force during Operation Joint Endeavor.
After completion of the Department Head curriculum in 1999, Captain Thompson reported to USS FORT MCHENRY (LSD 43) forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan as First Lieutenant. In 2000 Captain Thompson reported to USS ESSEX (LHD 2) in Sasebo, Japan as First Lieutenant. In 2002 Captain Thompson reported to Surface Warfare Officer School, Division Officer Course and served as the Academic Director in charge of training new Division Officers.
Captain Thompson served as the Commanding Officer of USS SAFEGUARD (ARS 50) from July 2003 until April 2005. Following graduation at the Naval War College he reported to U.S. Joint Forces Command, Joint Warfighting Center in Suffolk VA. In August 2008 Captain Thompson assumed command of USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49) forward deployed to Sasebo, Japan. Captain Thompson served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans at Expeditionary Strike Group Seven from June 2010 until July 2013. In November 2013 Captain Thompson reported to COMPHIBRON ELEVEN as the Deputy Commander. In March 2014, he was temporarily reassigned as Commanding Officer for USS GERMANTOWN (LSD 42).
