His sea-duty tours include an initial assignment to USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG 58), where he served as Combat Information Center Officer. In August, 1998 Lane reported to USS Whidbey Island (LSD 41), where he served as Auxiliary Machinery Officer and later as Operations Officer. As a department head, he served as the First Lieutenant on USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44), and as the Training and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Officer on USS Nassau (LHA 4). He served as Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), taking the ship through inspection and survey, a Southern Partnership Station Deployment, and her mid-life Extended Docking Phased Maintenance Availability (EDPMA) from 2010 to 2013.
Lane’s tours ashore include Force Personnel Officer on the staff of Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet; Joint Observer/Trainer on the U.S. Joint Forces Command Joint Warfighting Center Deployable Training Team; and N5 Action Officer and Battle Watch Captain on the staff of Commander, U.S. 2nd Fleet. He received a Master’s Degree from Old Dominion University in 2002. While assigned to U.S. Joint Forces Command, he completed his Joint Professional Military Education Phase II at the Joint Forces Staff College.
In September 2013, he reported to Chief of Naval Operations, Operations and Plans Directorate (N31), where he served as the Section Head for Global Force Management. He later served as the Deputy and Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans, and Strategy (N3/N5) and as Executive Assistant to the Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Operations, Plans, and Strategy (N3/N5B).
In December 2017 Lane became executive officer aboard USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26). In April of 2019 he became the Murtha’s commanding officer.
Captain Lane’s awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and various unit and service awards.
