USS John P. Murtha (LPD-26)


CAPT. Anthony C. Roach (Tony) USN

Captain Tony Roach is a native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and graduate of Temple University, where he received a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil/Construction Engineering Technology. He was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Pennsylvania. He reported to flight training in Corpus Christi, TX and Pensacola, FL, where he received his Wings of Gold in 1996. He received his Master of the Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies as well as his Joint Professional Military Education, Phase I & II from the Naval War College, College of Naval Warfare in 2008.

His operational assignments include; HS-4 in Coronado flying the SH-60F and HH-60H. This tour included deployments aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), participating in Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. He was assigned to CVW-9 aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as the Helicopter Operations Officer and Combat Search and Rescue Officer. He also deployed aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) and USS John C Stennis (CVN 74) supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM while assigned to HS-8 flying the SH-60F and HH-60H. Capt Roach served as HSC-12 Executive Officer and Commanding Officer flying the MH-60S as a component of CVW-2 and USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Strike Group supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM and NEW DAWN.

His other assignments include, HS-10 as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Flight Instructor; CHSWP Weapons & Tactics Unit as a Seahawk Weapons & Tactics Instructor; Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, staff in the J5 Directorate for the Deputy Director Western Hemisphere where he was responsible for Air and Land Domain issues within Homeland Defense.

His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, 2 Air Medals (Strike/Flight Awards), 3 Navy Commendation Medals, 3 Navy Achievement Medals, and various unit and campaign decorations. During his aviation career, he has accumulated more than 3,600 mishap-free flight hours.
