Sea duty tours include initial assignment to USS ANTIETAM (CG 54) where he served as Deck Division Officer, Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and Propulsion Division Officer from 1995-1997. This was followed by assignment as Main Propulsion Assistant on USS JUNEAU (LPD 10) from 1997-1999. As a department head, he served as Weapons Officer, Combat Systems Officer, and Operations Officer on USS MILIUS (DDG 69) from 2002-2005. He was the second Executive Officer of USS SAMPSON (DDG 102) from 2008-2010. His most recent at-sea assignment was Commanding Officer of USS STERETT (DDG 104) from 2012-2014.
Ashore, he attended the Naval Postgraduate School, earning an M.S. in Systems Engineering and his Command and Staff diploma from the Naval War College. Following his department head tours, he served briefly as a maritime warfare instructor at Surface Warfare Officers School, before being ordered to Iraq as an individual augmentee. He spent 11.5 months in the city of Mosul, serving as the Operations Officer (S-3) for the Army’s 403rd Civil Affairs Battalion. Immediately prior to his command tour, he was the Joint / Strike Group Exercise Planner on the staff of the Commander, U.S. Third Fleet. Post-command he went to Washington, D.C. as a student at The Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy, followed by assignment as an interagency liaison for U.S. Special Operations Command.
He assumed duties as the executive officer of USS SOMERSET (LPD 25) in November 2017. Captain Bateshansky is a trusty Golden Shellback.
