CAPT. Walter (Sarge) M. Slaughter, USN
Captain Walt “Sarge” Slaughter, a native of Austin, Texas, attended Texas A&M University prior to joining the Navy through the Naval Aviation Cadet program. In October
1991, CAPT Slaughter received his commission and was designated a Naval Aviator at NAS Meridian, MS. His first assignment was as an Instructor Pilot in the “Attack Frogs”
of VT-19, flying the T-2C Buckeye.
In September 1992, CAPT Slaughter reported to the "Shamrocks" of VS-41 for initial training in the S-3B Viking and upon completion of training joined the “Red
Griffins” of VS-38. From December 1993 until August 1997, he completed two deployments aboard USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64). In September 1997, CAPT Slaughter returned to
VS-41 as an Instructor Pilot and Landing Signals Officer (LSO).
CAPT Slaughter returned to the fleet in May 1999 as Carrier Air Wing NINE LSO. Cross-training in the F-14A Tomcat, he deployed with USS JOHN C. STENNIS (CVN 74),
flying combat missions in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and was selected for transition to the Tomcat community.
In November 2000, CAPT Slaughter reported to the “Fighting Checkmates” of VF-211. Serving as the Assistant Maintenance Officer, he deployed with JOHN C. STENNIS in
support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. After transition to the F-14D, CAPT Slaughter reported to the “Fighting Blacklions” of VF-213 in May 2003. Serving as the Quality
Assurance Officer and Operations Officer, he deployed with USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
In November of 2005, CAPT Slaughter reported to the United States Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, VA. Within the Joint Center for Operational Analysis, he served as
an Operations Analyst and as the Executive Assistant to the Director.
Selected for Strike Fighter command, CAPT Slaughter completed F/A-18F Super Hornet training at VFA-106 and in May 2008 reported to VFA-213 as Executive Officer.
Following an extended combat deployment with USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, he assumed Command of the Blacklions in August 2009.
In January 2011, CAPT Slaughter reported to OPNAV N88 as the Special Programs requirements officer. Selected for the Aviation Nuclear Power Program, CAPT Slaughter
began the nuclear power training track in January 2012, graduating with distinction. He served as Executive Officer, USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70), from August 2013 to September 2015 completing a ten-month deployment in support of Operation INHERENT RESOLVE.
CAPT Slaughter assumed command of USS NEW ORLEANS (LPD 18) in November 2016.
CAPT Slaughter has more than 4,750 flight hours and 1,155 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious
Service Medal (three awards), Air Medal (four Strike Flight awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards), the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the
Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (three awards), and numerous unit, campaign, and service awards.
