USS Boxer (LHD-4)
CAPT. Michael A. Ruth, USN
Captain Michael Ruth hails from Alexandria, Virginia and joined the Navy in 1987. He reported to Aviation Officer Candidate School in
1989 and proceeded to flight training in Corpus Christi, TX and Pensacola, FL, where he received his Wings of Gold in 1991. He received
a Bachelor of Science Degree from Regents College, NY, Masters Degree in Management and International Business from the University of
Redlands, CA and is a graduate of the Joint Forces Command and Staff College.
His operational assignments include USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70); HS-7 in Jacksonville, FL flying the SH-3H, SH-60F, and HH-60H. This
tour included deployments aboard USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) and USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), participating in Operations
SOUTHERN WATCH, PROVIDE PROMISE and SHARP GUARD. He was assigned to USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) in Yokosuka, Japan as the Assistant
Navigator. He deployed aboard USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) supporting Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and SOUTHERN WATCH while assigned
to HS-15 flying the SH-60F and HH-60H. Capt Ruth served as HS-8/HSC-8 Executive Officer and Commanding Officer of the Navy’s first
carrier-based, MH-60S Armed Helicopter Squadron as a component of CVW-9 and USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Strike Group supporting
Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM.
His other assignments include, HS-10, in San Diego, as a Fleet Replacement Squadron Flight Instructor; Helicopter Shore Detailer,
Navy Personnel Command, Millington, Tenn.; Chief Exercise and Engagement Officer, CENTCOM in support of OEF, forward deployed to Oman;
Chief Staff Officer of Commander Helicopter Sea Combat Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet; Deputy Commander, Al Asad Air Base, Iraq.
Prior to reporting aboard as USS Boxer’s Executive Officer, Captain Ruth served as the Commanding Officer, Helicopter Sea Combat
Squadron (HSC) 3, the Navy’s West Coast MH-60S, SH-60F/HH-60H Fleet Replacement Squadron. He assumed command of USS Boxer on June 5, 2015.
His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, 3 awards; Navy Commendation
Medal, 5 awards; Army Commendation Medal; Navy Achievement Medal, 2 awards; and various campaign and service awards. During his
aviation career, he has accumulated more than 4,375 mishap-free flight hours in seven aircraft models.
