  • Launched, 3 June 1936
  • Commissioned, 24 October 1936
  • Name shortened in May of 1937 Taney
  • Roger B. Taney departed Philadelphia, 19 December, transited the Panama Canal from the 27th to the 29th, and arrived at her home port, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, 18 January 1937
  • Taney underwent her first major rearmament at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard in December 1940. She received her last major pre-war refit at the Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA. in the spring of the following year, 1941.
  • Transferred for duty with the Navy, 25 July 1941, she reported for duty with the local defense forces of the 14th Naval District
  • Taney was moored alongside pier 6, Honolulu harbor on 7 December 1941 when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor
  • Taney patrolled the waters off Honolulu for the remainder of 1941 and into 1942
  • Designated WPG-37, 22 January 1942
  • Taney (WPG-37) operated locally out of Honolulu into 1943 before sailing for Boston late that winter via Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA. for re-gunning
  • Reassigned to Convoy Escort duty in the North Atlantic in March 1944
  • Converted the an AGC (combined operations and communications headquarters Ship) in 1944 at Boston Navy Yard, re-designated as WAGC-37
  • Conversion work completed January 1945, Taney sailed for Norfolk for shakedown and duty in the Pacific
  • Taney participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa operations
  • At the end of the war Taney proceeded to Japan, where she took part in the occupation of Wakayama before sailing for the United States
  • Taney (WAGC-37) underwent re-conversion for peacetime service, 1945-1946, at Charleston Navy Yard for duty on ocean-weather stations
  • Following re-conversion to peace time service Taney (WPG-37) was assigned to ocean-weather station duty in the Pacific, homeported at Alameda, CA.
  • On 1 May 1965 Taney was re-designated as a High Endurance Cutters or WHEC
  • Assigned to Coast Guard Squadron Three off Vietnam in 1969, participating in Operation Market Time interdiction and coastal surveillance effort in Vietnam
  • Taney returned to Alameda, arriving there February 1970
  • In February 1972 Taney was re-assigned to the east coast, homeported at Norfolk, VA. were she served out the remainder of her Coast Guard career
  • Decommissioned, 7 DEcember 1986, and turned over to the city of Baltimore, MD. for use as a museum ship, where she still resides.
  • Current Disposition, National Historic Landmark anchored in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and cared for by the Baltimore Maritime Museum
