Civil War Medal

Sidewheel Steamer Tinclad No.45):
  • Laid down in 1863 as the sidewheel steamboat Argosy No. 2 at Monongahela, PA.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Acquired by the Navy, 14 November 1863
  • Converted to a tinclad gunboat, renamed Wave
  • Commissioned, date unknown
  • USS Wave was initially assigned to the West Gulf Blockade Squadron
  • In early in 1864, she was re-assigned to the West Gulf Blockading Squadron and took up her initial station off New Orleans, LA.
  • On 15 April Wave was ordered to shift to a position at the mouth of the Calcasieu River in southwestern Louisiana
  • On 24 April Wave arrived on station and entered the mouth of the river in company with USS Granite City to collect Confederate renegades for service in the Navy and to confiscate all material that the Confederacy could utilize for military purposes
  • On 6 May Wave and Granite City came under attack and were captured by the Confederates. Both ships were riding at anchor in the river and were attacked at daybreak by the Confederate Sabine Pass garrison. Granite City surrendered about 45 minutes later, Wave was able to fight on for another 45 minutes until her guns and engines disabled and eight of her crew wounded her commanding officer surrendered
  • Wave was taken to into service as a cargo ship for the Confederacy
  • Final Disposition is unknown, but she was probably destroyed by retreating Confederate forces.
