Confederate blockade runner Don, an iron, twin-screw, two-stacked steamer and running mate of Hansa, both
were blockade-runners operated and partly owned by the State of North Carolina and are generally considered to have been public vessels for all practical purposes.
Don with a cargo of Army uniforms, blankets and shoes picked up at Nassau, fell victim to USS Pequot, 4 March 1864, on her third attempt to
run into Wilmington, N.C.
Taken to the Boston prize court, purchased by the US Navy in April 1864
Commissioned USS Don in April, assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron
