  • Built in 1836 by John Laird at Birkenhead, England., for export to Savannah, GA.
  • Knocked down and assembled in Savannah
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Chatham was used as a river steamer until the beginning of the Civil War
  • When the war began Chatham became a blockade runner
  • Captured by USS Huron while running the blockade, 16 December 1863
  • Chatham was turned over to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and commissioned, 22 June 1864, Acting Master E. L. Smith in command
  • Assigned as harbor ship at Port Royal, USS Chatham transported men and supplies in the harbor throughout the remainder of the war
  • Decommissioned in April 1865 and sold 2 September 1865
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown
