Purchased by the Navy, 12 October 1861, at New York City
Fitted out at the New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Commissioned, 19 February 1862, Acting Master Newell Graham in command
Assigned to the Mortar Flotilla, West Gulf Blockading Squadron
Soon after being commissioned, A. Houghton departed New York and proceeded via Key West, Ship Island, MS., to the Mississippi Delta
A. Houghton supplied David Porters Mortar Flotilla with ammunition during the shelling of Forts Jackson and St. Philip
The bark participated in the the siege of Vicksburg until late June 1862
A. Houghton desended the Mississippi River to New Orleans to replenish her supply of ammunition
She departed New Orleans , 3 July, towed back upstream by the merchant steamer Empire Parish
On 6 July 1862, while the two ships were passing Grand Gulf, MS., Southern batteries fired upon them and scored several hits, wounding two men
A. Houghton ran past the guns at Vicksburg with Farragut and descended the river downstream to New Orleans
The bark was sent to Pensacola where she served as ammunition ship for the squadron until she sailed north in the early autumn
Decommissioned at New York Navy Yard, 12 October 1862
Recommissioned after repairs, 3 December 1862
A. Houghton departed New York, 1 January 1863, bound for Pensacola to again take up her duties supporting Farragut's squadron
She remained at Pensacola until March 1863 when she sailed to New York to load supplies for the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron
A. Houghton served the ships of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron primarily at Hampton Roads
Decommission, 30 August 1863 at Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, VA. for repairs to her leaking hull
Recommissioned, 1 October 1863, and transferred to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, at Port Royal, S.C.
She sailed north late in May 1865 and was decommissioned for the last time at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, 9 June 1865
Sold at public auction, 10 August 1865
