Civil War Medal

Sternwheel Casemate Iron-clad Steamer:
  • Built at Shreveport LA., as a sternwheel steamer
  • Launched, 14 April 1863
  • Commissioned, 12 September 1863, CSS Missouri, LT. J. H. Carter, CSN, in command
  • For most of the war Missouri was trapped in the Shreveport, LA. area by low water on the Red River
  • Missouri never saw action but engaged in transport and mining details between Alexandria and Shreveport, LA., above the Red River obstructions
  • At the end of hostilities Missouri surrendered to U.S naval forces on the Red River, 3 June 1865
  • Taken into the U.S. Navy at Mound City, IL., but never commissioned
  • Dismantled and laid up at Mound City.
  • Hull sold at public auction at Mound City, IL., 29 November 1865, to John Riley for $2,100
