Sidewheel River Steamer:
  • Built in 1852 as the sidewheel river steamer Ed Howard at New Albany, IN.
  • Purchased by Confederacy in 1861 at New Orleans for $8,000
  • Converted for military service as a timber clad river gunboat
  • Commissioned, CSS General Polk, 20 April 1862, LT. J. H. Carter, CSN in command
  • CSS General Polk was assigned to Flag Officer George N. Hollins Louisiana defense fleet
  • Flag Officer Hollins moved his fleet up th Mississippi River in support of Army operations near New Madrid, MO.
  • After the fall on Island NO. 10 CSS General Polk escaped 75 miles up the Yazoo River where she was burned, 26 June 1862, to prevent capture by Union forces
