Civil War Medal

Iron-clad Screw Steamer:
  • Laid down in December 1862 as an iron-clad screw steamer for the State of South Carolina at Charleston, S.C. by James M. Eason
  • Known as the Ladies gunboat because of the funding by the city's "Ladies' Gun-boat Association"
  • Completed in September 1863, CDR Isaac N. Brown, CSN in command
  • CSS Charleston served as the flagship of the Confederate Navy's Charleston Squadron together with the rams CSS Palmetto State and CSS Chicora
  • Final Disposition, CSS Charleston was set on fire and blown up in the Cooper River on the night of 17/18 February 1865 to prevent her capture by the Union Army
