USS Swatara (I)
Swatara-class Screw Sloop-of-War :
Laid down, date unknown, as a wooden, screw sloop at Philadelphia Navy Yard
Launched, 23 May 1865
Commissioned, USS Swatara, 15 November 1865, CDR. William A. Jeffers in command
USS Swatara's first assignment was to the West Indies Squadron, she stood out from Hampton Roads, 12 January 1866, for Bermuda and the West Indies
She called on various ports before departing the area 1 May arriving at Washington Navy Yard on the 7th for repairs
Swatara departed Washington, 16 June for Norfolk and assignment to the European Squadron
She stood out of Norfolk, 27 June arriving at Lisbon, 19 July 1866 to join the flagship USS Colorado
During her tour with the European Squadron Swatara visited numerous ports including Southampton, England, Bremerhaven, Germany, Helder, The Netherlands,
the French Alantic seaports of Cherbourg, Brest, L'Orient, Rochefort, and Bordeaux and the Spanish ports of Ferrol and Vigo
During her tour of Mediterranean duty the sloop put into Tangier, Morocco, Gibraltar, Ciyita Vecchia, Papal States, Malta, Alexandria, Egypt
She continued to cruise in the Mediterranean area throughout the first half of 1867, replenished from 1 July to 6 August at Lisbon, returned to the Mediterranean to
anchor at Smyrna and Constantinople before returning westward to Lisbon
Early 1868 she cruised down the West coast of Africa calling at Monrovia, Liberia, Fernando Po and St. Paul Loando, Puerto Praya, Cape Verde Islands
Swatara completed her service with the European Squadron in May and reached Philadelphia Navy Yard, 25 May 1868
She moved on to New York Navy Yard, arriving 30 May
Swatara was decommissioned, at New York Navy Yard, 17 June 1869, and placed in reserve.
Recommissioned, 11 November 1869, for service with the North Atlantic Squadron, putting to sea 27 November for Aspinwall, Colombia (now Colon, Panama)
Returning to New York, 12 January 1870, and again deploying to the Caribbean into 1871, where her principal service was protecting United States interests in
Dominican waters,
Returning to the United States to be decommissioned at Norfolk Navy Yard, 20 December 1871
Swatara was completely dismantled and given a new hull and machinery to become, a new ship, USS Swatara (II)
