Namesake
Contoocook - A village and census-designated place within the town of Hopkinton in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States.
The village is named after the Contoocook River that runs through it. The name Contoocook comes from the Pennacook tribe of Native Americans and perhaps means "place of
the river near pines." Other variations of the name include the Abenaki meaning "nut trees river" or Natick language meaning "small plantation at the river.

This flag flew over the USS Contoocook from 1864 to 1868. When the ship was renamed Albany in 1868 the
Contoocook flag was replaced by the national ensign. |
