USS Louisiana (I)

Sloop:
  • Built in New Orleans, La., in 1812 for merchant service
  • Purchased by the Navy in September 1812
  • Placed in service immediately in defense of New Orleans against British invasion, unarmed and not fitted out through the first 2 years of war
  • After being armed Louisiana served as COMO. Daniel T. Patterson's flagship in August 1814
  • The sloop, the heaviest and most powerfully armed ship in Patterson's small flotilla, served as a floating battery, stationed along the right bank of the Mississippi
  • After the British began landing troops near New Orleans only 9 miles below the city Louisiana and Carolina were ordered to sailed downriver, 23 December in support of General Jackson's hastily assembled troops
  • Louisiana and Carolina pounded the British flank for four days making their advance untenable and giving Jackson time to dig in
  • The loss of Carolina, 27 December left Louisiana the only naval vessel at New Orleans
  • She continued to support Jackson's defense stopping a British advance on the 28th and providing flanking fire on the 30th
  • To strengthen the defense of the city Louisiana's inshore guns were brought ashore and placed in redoubts to bombard the enemy
  • Louisiana supported General Jackson's soldiers with accurate fire until 8 January 1815, when the British veterans were disastrously defeated in the last attack on the city
