Ironclad Steam Sloop:
  • Built in 1863 at Richmond, VA.
  • Commissioned, CSS Virginia (II) CDR. Robert Baker Pegram, CSN
  • Engaged Federal ships at Trent's Reach, 21 June 1864
  • Exchanged fire with the enemy at Dutch Gap 13 August and 22 October
  • Participated in the capture of Signal Hill, 17 August 1864.
  • Damaged, 23 - 24 January 1865 in action during second unsuccessful attempt to circumvent obstructions in Trent's Reach.
  • Destroyed in the James River before the evacuation of Richmond, Va., 3 April 1865

    Line engraving, based on a sketch by A.R. Waud, published in "Harper's Weekly", 11 February 1865, page 81. It depicts the Confederate ironclads CSS Virginia II, CSS Richmond and CSS Fredericksburg attempting to run past the obstructions at Trent's Reach to attack Federal positions along the James River.

Jamestown, whose paddlebox tops are visible in the center, was sunk as an obstruction off Drewry's Bluff,15 May 1862.
