Great Western was used as an ordnance boat for the Navy on the western waters

Supported the combined operations at Vicksburg in 1862 and 1863

Assigned as receiving ship at Cairo, IL. in July 1864

Reassigned as receiving ship at Mound City, IL. in March 1865

Placed out of service and sold at auction to John Riley, 29 November3 1865
