USS Detroit (I)


Sloop-of-War:
  • Built in January 1813 by the British at Amherstburg Royal Naval Dockyard, Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada
  • Launched, July 1813
  • Commissioned HMS Detroit in August 1813
  • Captured by the Americans during the Battle of Lake Erie, 10 September 1813
  • Detroit was commissioned into the United States Navy, however, she was so damaged that the sloop took no further part in the war
  • Detroit was so badly damaged that she was taken into Put-in-Bay, OH. to prevent her sinking
  • She was sunk for preservation at Misery Bay off Presque Isle
  • She was sold in 1825, refloated and converted for commercial service in 1833
  • Final Disposition In 1841, Detroit was reduced to a hulk at Buffalo, New York where she was purchased with the intent of sending her over Niagara Falls
  • The plan went awry and ex-Detroit ran aground on a shoal before the falls and broke up
