USS Dolphin (III)

  • Launched, 17 June 1836
  • Commissioned USS Dolphin, 6 September 1836, LT. W. E. McKenne in command
  • Dolphin joined the Brazil Squadron, 17 April 1839
  • Decommissioned, 25 May 1839, at New York
  • Recommissioned later in 1839, Dolphin cruised two times off the coast of Africa to suppress the slave trade, 18 December 1839 to 14 July 1840 and 5 November 1840 to 25 May 1841
  • Reassigned to the Home Squadron, 7 September 1841, to cruise the Atlantic coast and West Indies
  • Laid up at Norfolk in October 1843
  • Recommissioned, 13 November 1845, rejoining the African Squadron, returning to New York, 5 November 1847
  • Underway, 6 May 1848, to join the East India Squadron to protect American citizens in Asiatic waters returning to New York, 24 June 1851
  • Recommissioned, 10 September 1852, to test and perfect discoveries made by LT. M. F. Maury in his investigation of the winds and currents of the ocean
  • Placed in ordinary at New York in 1854
  • Recommissioned at Norfolk, 23 April 1855, for duty with the African Squadron
  • Decommissioned, 27 July 1857
  • Recommissioned, to intercept slave ships in the West Indies from June to September 1858
  • Captured the slaver Echo, 21 August 1858, with 318 Africans on board and sending her into Charleston, S.C.
  • Dolphin sailed from Boston, 16 October 1858, for duty on the Brazil Station, taking part in the expedition to Paraguay to obtain redress for the unprovoked firing upon the American ship Water Witch and to settle diplomatic difficulties
  • Dolphin returned to Norfolk, 22 December 1860
  • Laid up at Gosport Navy Yard
  • Burned there, 21 April 1861, by Union forces to prevent her falling into Confederate hands
