Wooden Sternwheel Steamer (Tinclad No.25):
  • Built in 1863 at Brownsville, PA.
  • Purchased, 6 December 1864, at Cincinnati, OH., by the Navy Department
  • Fitted out for naval service at Mound City, IL.
  • Commissioned USS Colossus, 24 February 1865, Acting Master Frederick. G. Sampson in command until decommissioning
  • She was identified as Tinclad #25, replacing USS Covington after she was lost 5 May 1864
  • During the Civil War USS Colossus was assigned to the Mississippi Squadron, patrolling between Vicksburg, MS. and the Arkansas River
  • Decommission, 3 July 1865, at Mound City
  • Sold 17 August 1865
  • Renamed Memphis, 27 September 1865.
  • Final Disposition, Snagged and lost at Pine Bluff, AR, 17 December 1866
