USS Hunter
Brig:
Built by Amherstburg Royal Naval Dockyard, Upper Canada in 1806 as General Hunter for the Canadian Provincial Marine at Maiden, Canada
Part of Commodore Barclay's squadron on Lake Erie and was captured along with five other ships in the Battle of Lake Erie 10 September 1813
Hunter was one of the ships spoken of in Perry's immortal dispatch to Gen. William Henry Harrison: "We have met the enemy and they are ours, two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop."
Hunter served on the Lake for the remainder of the war and was then sold to private owner.
Purchased by US Army for use as Great Lakes supply vessel.
Force ashore in gale August 1816. Hull remains buried under Southampton beach in Ontario. Excavated in 2004, artifacts on display at Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, Southampton, Ontario.
