USS Hunter


Brig:
  • Built by Amherstburg Royal Naval Dockyard, Upper Canada in 1806 as General Hunter for the Canadian Provincial Marine at Maiden, Canada
  • Part of Commodore Barclay's squadron on Lake Erie and was captured along with five other ships in the Battle of Lake Erie 10 September 1813
  • Hunter was one of the ships spoken of in Perry's immortal dispatch to Gen. William Henry Harrison: "We have met the enemy and they are ours, two ships, two brigs, one schooner and one sloop."
  • Hunter served on the Lake for the remainder of the war and was then sold to private owner.
  • Purchased by US Army for use as Great Lakes supply vessel.
  • Force ashore in gale August 1816. Hull remains buried under Southampton beach in Ontario. Excavated in 2004, artifacts on display at Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre, Southampton, Ontario.
