USS Scorpion (III)
Sidewheel Steamer:
Built in 1846 as the sidewheel steamer Aurora, by Bishop and Simonson, New York for Sidney Mason and William D. Thompson
Launched, in 1846
Purchased by the U.S. Navy, at New York, 7 January 1847, for use in the Mexican War
Commissioned USS Scorpion, 23 February 1847, CDR. Abraham Bigelow in command
USS Scorpion joined the Home Squadron at Anton Lizardo, 27 April 1847
She participated in the expedition against Tabasco, 16 June 1847, serving as the flagship for COMO. Matthew C. Perry
Scorpion returned to Anton Lizardo,25 July 1847
For the remainder of the war she patrolled the coast of Mexico
At the close of the war, she sailed for the Brooklyn Navy Yard, arriving, 11 August 1848
Decommissioned at Brooklyn Navy Yard, 21 August 1848
Sold at auction, 23 December 1848
Redocumented as the merchant steamer, SS Isthmus
Final Disposition, lost at sea in 1854
