USS Scorpion (III)


Sidewheel Steamer:
  • Built in 1846 as the sidewheel steamer Aurora, by Bishop and Simonson, New York for Sidney Mason and William D. Thompson
  • Launched, in 1846
  • Purchased by the U.S. Navy, at New York, 7 January 1847, for use in the Mexican War
  • Commissioned USS Scorpion, 23 February 1847, CDR. Abraham Bigelow in command
  • USS Scorpion joined the Home Squadron at Anton Lizardo, 27 April 1847
  • She participated in the expedition against Tabasco, 16 June 1847, serving as the flagship for COMO. Matthew C. Perry
  • Scorpion returned to Anton Lizardo,25 July 1847
  • For the remainder of the war she patrolled the coast of Mexico
  • At the close of the war, she sailed for the Brooklyn Navy Yard, arriving, 11 August 1848
  • Decommissioned at Brooklyn Navy Yard, 21 August 1848
  • Sold at auction, 23 December 1848
  • Redocumented as the merchant steamer, SS Isthmus
  • Final Disposition, lost at sea in 1854
