Sidewheel Steamer:
  • Built in 1864 as the wooden sidewheel steamer F.W. Lincoln at Boston, MA/
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased, 2 August 1864, for the Navy by RADM S.H. Stringham from McKay & Aldus at Boston, MA. for $72,000
  • Renamed Phlox, the same day at Boston Navy Yard
  • Commissioned USS Phlox, 14 September 1864, at Boston Navy Yard , Act.ENS. Douglas F. O'Brien in command
  • Phlox was assigned to the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron
  • She steamed south late in September and operated in the James River helping maintain communications among the Union ships, supporting General Grant's operations against Richmond
  • In January 1865 she steamed to Wilmington to support the joint Army-Navy attack on Ft. Fisher, N. C. which doomed Wilmington
  • After Ft. Fisher fell, Phlox returned to the James River where she served through the end of the war
  • Decommissioned, 28 July 1865, at the Washington Navy Yard
  • Later that year Phlox was moved to Annapolis and subsequently served in a non-commissioned status as practice ship for midshipmen at the Naval Academy until 1873
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown

    Namesake
    Phlox - Is a genus of 67 species of perennial and annual plants in the family Polemoniaceae. They are found mostly in North America (one in Siberia) in diverse habitats from alpine tundra to open woodland and prairie. Some flower in spring, others in summer and fall. Flowers may be pale blue, violet, pink, bright red, or white. Many are fragrant.
