Screw Tug:
  • Laid down in 1861 as the screw tug Sampson at New Haven, MO.
  • Launched, date unknown
  • Purchased by the War Department in the fall of 1861 for use of the Western Flotilla
  • Transferred to the Navy, 30 September 1862
  • Placed in service the same day, Acting ENS. William Harris in command
  • Renamed Pansy, 24 October 1862, the tug served the Mississippi squadron throughout the Civil War
  • Pansy operated primarily out of Cario, IL., and Vicksburg, MS., she towed larger ships and acted as a dispatch vessel
  • After the war she served as a tug at Mound City until sold there, 1 September 1868, for $450

    Phansy - The garden pansy is a type of large-flowered hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower. It is derived by hybridization from several species in the section Melanium of the genus Viola, particularly Viola tricolor, a wildflower of Europe and western Asia known as heartsease.
