Sternwheel Gunboat (Tinclad No.26):
  • Built in 1864 as a wooden sternwheel steamer at Allegheny PA.
  • Launched in 1864
  • Purchased for the Navy by Paymaster C.C. Jackson, 21 January 1865, from J.A. Williamson and J.G. Ishaim, for $38,500
  • Mist was converted into a gunboat during the first few months of 1865
  • Commissioned USS Mist, 2 March 1865, at Mound City, IL., Acting Master W. E. H. Fontress in command
  • USS Mist was assigned to the 8th District, Mississippi Squadron and patrolled the river protecting steamers and river settlements from desperadoes
  • Mist was decommissioned, 4 August 1865, at Mound City
  • Sold at public auction to C. C. Hutchinson, 17 August 1865
  • Documented as a merchant ship, she served American commerce on the Mississippi and its tributaries until 1874.
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown
