Sidewheel Steamer-Ram:
Built in 1863 for the War Department as a wooden-hull sidewheel ram, at New Albany, IN.
Transferred to the Navy, 7 December 1863, while still incomplete
Commissioned USS Avenger, 29 February 1864, at Cairo, IL., Acting Volunteer LT. Charles A. Wright in command
During the Civil War USS Avenger was assigned to the Mississippi Squadron Third District and participated in the following expeditions/actions;
Red River campaign in March 1864
Blockading duties between Morganza and Donaldsonville, May to November 1864
Patrol duties on the Mississippi between Vicksburg and Natchez
Decommissioned, 1 August 1865, at Mound City, IL.
Sold, 29 November 1865, to Cutting & Ellis, documented Balize, 16 April 1867
Continued in commercial operation until 1871
Final Disposition, dismantled in 1871.
