Civil War Medal

Sidewheel Steamer-Ram:
  • Built in 1863 for the War Department as a wooden-hull sidewheel ram, at New Albany, IN.
  • Transferred to the Navy, 7 December 1863, while still incomplete
  • Commissioned USS Avenger, 29 February 1864, at Cairo, IL., Acting Volunteer LT. Charles A. Wright in command
  • During the Civil War USS Avenger was assigned to the Mississippi Squadron Third District and participated in the following expeditions/actions;
    Red River campaign in March 1864
    Blockading duties between Morganza and Donaldsonville, May to November 1864
    Patrol duties on the Mississippi between Vicksburg and Natchez
  • Decommissioned, 1 August 1865, at Mound City, IL.
  • Sold, 29 November 1865, to Cutting & Ellis, documented Balize, 16 April 1867
  • Continued in commercial operation until 1871
  • Final Disposition, dismantled in 1871.
