Steel-hulled Schooner:
  • Laid down at Leith, Scotland in 1881, for Spain as a transport
  • Launched, 1883
  • Ran aground at Bakor Bay, Philippine Islands, 4 May 1898
  • Abandoned by the Spanish, taken over by the US Navy
  • Commissioned, USS Manila, 29 July 1898, LCDR. Frederick Singer in command and assigned to the Asiatic Squadron
  • During the Philippine Insurrection, 1899-1900, USS Manila participated in the following actions:
    Philippines Campaign
    Campaign and Dates Campaign and Dates
    Bombardment of San Fabian, 7 to 9 November 1899 Luzon Gulf expedition, November 1899
    Capture of Zamboanga, 16 November 1899 .

  • Decommissioned, 1 July 1903, at Navy Yard Mare Island, CA.
  • Placed in service as a prison ship at Mare Island in 1907
  • Placed out of service, date unknown
  • Sold, 7 May 1913, to J.W. Strong, for $7019.16, removed from Mare Island by towing to the Union Iron Works in San Francisco.
  • Final Disposition, fate unknown
