Tonti Class Gasoline Tanker:
  • Laid down as Tavern, 16 May 1945, a Maritime Commission type (T1-M-BT2) tanker hull, under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 2648) at Todd-Houston Shipbuilding Corp., Houston, TX.
  • Launched, 23 August 1945
  • Completed December 1945, renamed Tonti and delivered to the Maritime Commission;
  • Laid up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, Orange, TX.
  • Leased, 24 June 1948 to Marine Transport Lines, Inc. for operation for the Naval Transportation Service (NTS)
  • Assigned to the Military Sea Transportation Service (MSTS), 1 October 1949 and placed in service as USNS Tonti (T-AOG-76)
  • Placed out of service in July 1960 for lay up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet
  • Transferred to Colombia, 13 January 1965, renamed ARC Mamonal (BT-62)
  • Struck from the Naval Register, date unknown
  • Final Disposition, scrapped in 1975

    Namesake
    Tonti - Henri de Tonti (c.?1649 – September 1704), also spelled Henri de Tonty, was a Sicilian-born French military officer, explorer, and voyageur who assisted René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, with North American exploration and colonization from 1678 to 1686. De Tonti was one of the first explorers to navigate and sail the upper Great Lakes. He also sailed the Illinois River and the Mississippi River to its mouth claiming the land for Louis XIV of France. De Tonti established the first permanent European settlement in the lower Mississippi valley, known as Poste de Arkansea, making him "The Father of Arkansas. (Wikipedia)
