USAV FS-257 was manned by the US Coast Guard during World War II, later named Alhena (AKL-38) and loaned to the Republic of Korea
Camano Class Light Cargo Ship:
  • Laid down in 1944 as the Design 381 Freight-Supply Vessel FS-257 for the US Army at Wheeler Shipbuilding. Whitestone. N.Y.
  • Launched, circa 1944-45
  • Delivered to the US Army Quartermaster Corps between April and June 1944
  • Allocated to the US Army Transport ion Corps, commissioned, USAV FS-257, 24 June 1944, at New York, LT G.P. Hammond, USCG in command
  • USAV FS-257 departed New York, 26 July 1944 outbound to for the Southwest Pacific area were she operated including Leyte
  • LT. Hammond was succeeded by LTjg. S.N. Harstook, USCGR, date unknown
  • LTjg. Harstook was succeeded by LTjg. William F. Moffatt, USCG, 9 June 1945
  • Decommissioned, date unknown
  • Acquired by the US Navy, 12 December 1951
  • Named Alhena (AKL-38), and loaned to the Republic of Korea that same day
  • Returned to US Naval custody in January 1960
  • Struck from the Naval Register, 1 February 1960
  • Final Disposition, sold for scrapping in June 1960 to Hong Kong Rolling Mills, Ltd.
