82k | The USS Arequipa (AF-31) celebrate crossing the Equator when King Neptune and his court came aboard on 18 March 1945:
#1 - Electrician mate W. H. Carr kissing hand of Neptunus Rex. #2- L to R, A.T. Drake, Elect.1/C; unknown; L. C. Riddle, Chief MoMM #3 - A J Searby (in crown), W. H. Carr, Elect.2/c; unknown; L. C. Riddle #4 - Cal Cravath, Yeoman 1/c; Frank Ivantic, PO1/c, and unknown #5 - Ens. Dick Higgins, the ship's First Lieutenant, coming out of the slop chute which was filled with a few days garbage. I don't remember the name of his witness. #6 - Unknowns; the table on which the man is lying had wires running across and was hooked up to a magneto so that when he was "operated on" a knife would deliver an electric shock, but not cut him. #7 - A few of the crew getting a wash down. #8 - R. Sera, a seaman in the Deck Div., clipping hair of a polywog. #9 - The coveted Domain of Neptunus Rex card along with The Order of the Golden Dragon card issued for crossing the 180th meridian. |

They also invited the crew to come ashore and join their festivities. They all were wearing costumes of all colors. The crew had to stay on board as the ship was leaving early the next morning for Basilan Island. | Art Searby, LTjg. USNR Asst. Engineer USS Arequipa 1945-1946 | ||
203k | Series of photos showing USS Arequipa (AF-31) dry docking at Manicani Island, Leyte Gulf, 19 December 1945. The dry dock is probably USS ABSD-1.
