USS Neptune


CAPT. Louis Shane

Louis Shane (no middle name) was born 4 April 1877 in Hungary. Appointed to the US Navy 6 September 1894. Promoted to LCDR 1 July 1910. Assigned, 24 July 1915, as Officer in Charge of Navy Recruiting Station Pittsburgh, PA. LCDR. Shane was in command of USS Neptune from 29 May 1916 to September 1917. Promoted to CDR, 20 March 1918. CDR Shane was assigned to Inspection Duty, Bureau of Steam Engineering, 6 March 1918, followed by duty as Naval Inspector, machinery, Todd, Dry Dock, Tacoma, WA. Promoted to CAPT. 03 June 1922 CAPT. Shane was assigned 23 April 1924 as Naval Inspector machinery. Bethlehem. Shipbuilding Corp., Quincy, MA. He held this post until 1 June 1928 when he was assigned as Commanding Officer Navy Yard Portsmouth, N.H. On 7 November 1932 he was assignment to the Bureau of Engineering. CAPT. Shane retired, 30 June 1934.
Note: Behind Captain Shane is a framed photo of his son, Louis Shane Jr, after graduation from Annapolis. He went on to command the USS Shark (SS-174) and was in command of the Shark when it was lost in the Pacific in the early months of WWII.
