Tubes Six 22’ x 21” (4 bow, 2 stern)
In 1941 Nautilus and Narwhal received four
additional tubes, two under superstructure just forward of bridge and two under
after deck gun.
On Nautilus, in 1943, the forward deck tubes were
relocated nearer the bow in the superstructure. Narwhal, in 1942, got two
additional tubes forward near the bow and two aft near stern.
The forward tubes
under the bridge were removed and the aft tubes under the deck gun were
retained for pressure tight storage containers.

Note:
This was the start of what would become standard practice throughout the Gato,
Balao and Tench classes.
Boats built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard to
BuC&R/Portsmouth design plans (and those other yards that built to these
plans [Mare Island Navy Yard, and Boston Navy Yard]) used Fairbanks Morse 9 or
10 cylinder 38D 8-1/8 OP diesels.
Boats built at Electric Boat Company to
BuC&R/EB design plans (and those other yards that built to these plans [Manitowoc
Shipbuilding Company and Cramp Shipyard]) used Cleveland Diesel (GM) 248
diesels then after SS-251 Cleveland Diesel (GM) 16-278A diesels.
This engine
difference along with other construction differences marked the difference
between an EB-boat and a Portsmouth-boat. Both design sets were outstanding
as was the workmanship at all the yards, but the differences did set up
preferences amongst the sailors for one or the other type.
