    Vandegrift

    25k Alexander Archer Vandegrift was born on 13 March 1887 in Charlottesville, Va. and was commissioned into the Marine Corps on 22 January 1909 after graduating from the University of Virginia. After attending the Marine Officer‘s School at Port Royal, S.C. he served in a number of stateside and overseas assignments while advancing in rank. In March 1942 he was promoted to major general and assumed command of the First Marine Division. For outstanding services as Commanding General of the First Marine Division, Reinforced, during the attack on Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Gavutu in the Solomon Islands on 7 August 1942, he was awarded the Navy Cross, and for the subsequent occupation and defense from 07 August to 09 December 1942, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. On 1 January 1944, as a lieutenant general, he was sworn in as the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps. On 4 April 1945, he was appointed general, the first Marine officer on active duty to attain four-star rank. He left active service 31 December 1947 and passed away 8 May 1973. His body is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.

    USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) (1984-2015) was the first ship named in his honor.

Nine U.S. Navy ships took part in Missile Exercise 02-1, an anti-ship missile defense training evolution, as part of a Commander Task Force Seven Five (CTF-75) Multi-Sail battle group interoperability exercise. All participating ships are part of forward deployed Naval Forces based in Yokosuka and Sasebo, Japan.

Washington is sailing off the coast of Southern California where the crew is conducting training evolutions with Carrier Air Wing (CVN) 5. Washington departed San Diego 21 August en route to Yokosuka, Japan, where the ship will replace USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) as the U.S. Navy's only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.

The visit is in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the U.S. - Japan Mutual Security Treaty.     273k 08 July 2012: the Celebes Sea - The Philippine Navy coastal patrol craft BRP Salvador Abcede (PG 114), the corvette BRP Miguel Malvar (PS 19), the Philippine Coast Guard patrol boat PCG Pampanga (SARV 003), BRP IloIlo (PS 32) the U.S. Navy guided-missile frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter USCGC Waesche (WMSL 751) are underway in the Celebes Sea, during the conclusion of the at-sea phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Philippines 2012. CARAT is a series of bilateral military exercises between the U.S. Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Timor Leste joins the exercise for the first time in 2012.
