Alert Class Gunboat: Laid down, 1873 as an iron-hulled screw steamer by John Roach and Sons, Chester, PA; Launched, 18 September 1874; Commissioned , 27 May 1875; Decommissioned, 31 July 1882 at Mare Island Navy Yard, Vallejo, CA; Recommissioned, 8 October 1883; Decommissioned, 23 September 1886; Recommissioned, 15 January 1887; Decommissioned, 6 February 1890; Recommissioned, 9 October 1890; Decommissioned, 23 September 1893; Recommissioned, 2 April 1984; Decommissioned, 4 June 1898; Recommissioned, 11 May 1901; Decommissioning, 10 December 1903; Transferred on loan, early 1907 to the California Naval Militia; Returned to Navy control, 27 February 1910; Placed in commission, in reserve, 25 January 1912 in connection with her fitting out as a ; Placed in full commission, 1 July 1912; Redesignated (AS-4), 17 July 1020; Decommissioned (for the final time), 9 March 1922; Struck from the Naval Register, 1922; Sold for scrapping, 29 July 1922 to the A. Bercovich Co., Oakland, CA.
