Lapwing Class Minesweeper:

  • The second Peacock was laid down 31 August 1918 by the Staten Island Shipbuilding Co., Staten Island, NY
  • Launched 8 April 1919
  • Commissioned USS Peacock, Minesweeper No. 46, 27 December 1919
  • Decommissioned 14 February 1920 and loaned to the Shipping Board
  • Converted to a Salvage Tug and operated under charter to the Shipping Board
  • Designated AM 46, 17 July 1920
  • Collided with the Norwegian merchant ship SS Hindanger 24 August 1940 off Cartagena, Colombia and sank
  • Struck from the Naval Register 22 April 1941.

  • Beam 35' 5'
  • Draft 8' 10"
  • Speed 14 kts.
  • Complement 85
  • Armament: Two 3"/50 gun mounts
  • Propulsion: Two Babcock and Wilcox boilers, one triple expansion reciprocating steam engine, one shaft.
