30 January 1944 Launching at the Consolidated Shipbuilding Corp. Yard, New York. She was christened by Mrs. Joseph G. Feeney of Scranton Pennsylvania, wife of Lieutenant Junior Grade Joseph G. Feeney, USNR, who was then convalescing from injuries suffered when his merchant ship (Cities Service Oil Co, New York tanker SS Cities Service Missouri) was torpedoed and sunk in March 1943.
